Sum by month in one formula
You have a column of dates, a column of amounts, and you want the total for March. No filters, no pivot tables: one formula, and it works in Google Sheets too.
It's the same trick we posted on Instagram and TikTok. Below are the steps, the formula to copy and the Google Sheets version.
the example data
| A | B | C | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | data | descrizione | importo_eur |
| 2 | 28/02/2027 | Spesa | 84,30 |
| 3 | 03/03/2027 | Bolletta luce | 62,40 |
| 4 | 17/03/2027 | Treno | 49,00 |
| 5 | 02/04/2027 | Affitto | 650,00 |
Result for March: 111.40
The steps
1
Click the cell where you want the total, for example E2.
2
Type SOMMA.PIÙ.SE (SUMIFS) with the range to add up first (C:C), then two conditions on the dates (A:A).
3
First condition: date on or after 1 March. Second: date before 1 April. That catches all of March, the 31st included.
4
Press Enter. For another month, just change the numbers inside DATA (DATE).
The formula
EXCEL (ITALIAN)=SOMMA.PIÙ.SE(C:C;A:A;">="&DATA(2027;3;1);A:A;"<"&DATA(2027;4;1))
GOOGLE SHEETS=SUMIFS(C:C;A:A;">="&DATE(2027;3;1);A:A;"<"&DATE(2027;4;1))
Why it works
">="&DATA(2027;3;1) joins the symbol and the date into a single condition. Using "before 1 April" instead of "on or before 31 March" avoids trouble with 28, 30 or 31-day months and with dates that also carry a time.
If it doesn't work
- Result is 0: the dates are stored as text. Select them and use Data › Text to Columns, or =DATA.VALORE(A2) (DATEVALUE).
- #NAME?: you're using the Italian name in Sheets. There, functions are written in English.
- Separator: with Italian regional settings you use a semicolon, not a comma.
